  1. The chief calling.
    1. The “young men” are the same age as the young women, i.e., married and/or with children.
    2. He is to be “sober,” i.e., “discreet” (just like the old men and young women, 2,5).
      1. Negatively, this does not mean: somber.
      2. It means to be sane or sound of mind, temperate or self-controlled, curbing one’s passions.
      3. Balances perspective is put into one’s life by Christianity.
    3. Sobriety is the realization that such blessings places on us obligations:
  2. There are implications to being sober-minded: “likewise.”
    1. They realize that they have a place in the home and family.
      1. The strength of a congregation is determined by the homes.
      2. The sober-minded young man seeks a wife based on her attitude toward Jesus.
      3. He strives to lead, ruling his home well.
      4. He realizes that his love for his wife and children is something learned.
    2. He balances his home obligations with those outside the home.
    3. To do all of these things the young man must be sober-minded, self-disciplined
  3. Also “likewise” God’s purpose for such godliness is so “the word of God be not blasphemed.”
    1. “Blasphemed” is to speak against, to revile.
    2. A striving to obey God and His Word occasions the glorifying of our Father.
      1. The godly life makes obvious the lies of the mockers.
      2. Honor is given to God and to the teachings of His Word by godly conduct.
