- The chief calling.
- The “young men” are the same age as the young women, i.e., married and/or with children.
- He is to be “sober,” i.e., “discreet” (just like the old men and young women, 2,5).
- Negatively, this does not mean: somber.
- It means to be sane or sound of mind, temperate or self-controlled, curbing one’s passions.
- Balances perspective is put into one’s life by Christianity.
- Sobriety is the realization that such blessings places on us obligations:
- There are implications to being sober-minded: “likewise.”
- They realize that they have a place in the home and family.
- The strength of a congregation is determined by the homes.
- The sober-minded young man seeks a wife based on her attitude toward Jesus.
- He strives to lead, ruling his home well.
- He realizes that his love for his wife and children is something learned.
- He balances his home obligations with those outside the home.
- To do all of these things the young man must be sober-minded, self-disciplined
- Also “likewise” God’s purpose for such godliness is so “the word of God be not blasphemed.”
- “Blasphemed” is to speak against, to revile.
- A striving to obey God and His Word occasions the glorifying of our Father.
- The godly life makes obvious the lies of the mockers.
- Honor is given to God and to the teachings of His Word by godly conduct.
