- The duty of how we are to live.
- We are to live in a certain way while in “this present world.“
- That which characterizes the present world are “ungodliness and worldly lusts.”
- These are desires, cravings, or longings which belong to this world.
- “Ungodliness” is “no awe or reverence, to be destitute of reverential awe towards God.
- Christians “live” in this present world (not isolated physically from it).
- “Godly” is good awe or well reverence, i.e., piety towards God or living as before the face of God.
- The godly will live “righteously,” i.e., observant of God’s command.
- This in turn requires “soberly,” i.e., to be of healthy mind, and then moderate, self-disciplined, discreet.
- The basis for this calling is the fact that God’s grace which brings salvation has appeared to all men.
- The “grace of God” is God’s unmerited favor/love to sinful man which powerfully saves.
- God’s grace always “bringeth” results in salvation - effects salvation.
- Grace brings salvation “to all men” (cannot mean all are saved, for there is a hell).
- God’s grace has “appeared,” i.e, revealed, made manifest.
- The appearance of God’s saving grace in Jesus teaches us to live godly in this present world.
