- The significance.
- Our Mediator must be very man as well as very God.
- The Son of God entered human nature (the incarnation).
- He is God and man in one Person.
- His conception and birth was a willing deed on His part (Phil. 2:7).
- The incarnation implies the virgin birth.
- This truth has been repeatedly denied under the instigation of the devil.
- Why is this true so attached and denied?
- Scripture is clear that the Spirit, not Joseph, was the Conceiver (Luke 1:35; Matt. 1:18).
- The benefits of Jesus’ holy conception and virgin birth.
- First, Jesus has a perfect human nature.
- Second, Jesus’ holy conception shows that we are sinful at the root.
- Third, He is equipped to be the Savior.
- The great comfort is that He, being completely human, knows all of our infirmities.
- He assumed a weakened human nature with all of our infirmities, except sin (Belgic Conf., art 18).
- Especially does this enable Jesus to be our Mediator.
- His real humanity enables Him to take on Himself all my sinfulness and sin.
- His deity assures me that His birth and death are of infinite value to satisfy God’s justice for all my sinfulness and sin.
- He is able to translate our guilt into His righteousness and our pollution into holiness.
- And it enables the Son of Man to be a fitting Judge of all.
