- Its character.
- Christ suffered all His life (Heb. 2:10; Isa. 53:3,4; Psalm; 69:8; Luke 9: 41), living in the shadow of the cross.
- He suffered in His body (Matt. 8:17).
- He suffered in His soul (John 12:27; Luke 22:44; Matt. 26:37,38).
- Of all that He suffered, He was always most sensitive to God’s wrath (the righteous response against sin).
- Jesus suffering was unique , for He is the holy Jesus and the Son of God.
- Jesus’ suffering was necessary.
- Jesus suffered for sin.
- As the propitiatory sacrifice He suffered God’s wrath.
- As the atoning sacrifice He made the payment for sin; satisfying God’s justice, fully bearing His wrath.
- His suffering reconciled, earning righteousness and eternal life.
- He bore God’s wrath completely, so God has no more wrath against us - ever (Rom. 8:32-35).
- For whom did Jesus suffer? Catechism says, “the sins of all mankind.”
- This is not for every human in this world (John 10:14 with Matt. 7:23; John 10:11,26; and there is a hell).
- The expression “all mankind” conveys the Scriptural teaching that the elect form the essence of mankind.
- The implications of Jesus’ suffering.
- Believe in Jesus’ suffering for salvation: our sins are fully covered!
- In Jesus’ suffering we see the greatness of the love and mercy of God.
- Learn how horrible sin is in what and how much Jesus had to suffer because of our sin,.
- Let us grow in thankfulness and love of Him.
