Text: Revelation 21:9,22
Psalters: 254, 207, 124, 124
  1. The Lamb’s Wife
    1. The “bride, the Lamb’s wife” (9) is identical with the city (10).
      1. We saw the wedding (supper) of the Lamb (19:6-9).
      2. The ideal church has the beauty and splendor of a city: It is of pure gold as pure glass.
      3. The City is constantly coming down out of heaven (2), for it is a work of God’s sovereign grace.
    2. In this Holy City is the throne of God and of the Lamb (22:3,4).
      1. God’s majesty and sovereignty (throne) is revealed in the love relationship of God with His people.
      2. In the city God’s sovereignty manifests itself as a sovereignty of love.
    3. The Lord God Almighty through the Lamb is its temple (22).
      1. There will be no need for the inhabitants to go some place to fellowship with God.
      2. The radiance of God’s gracious relationship with His people in all its fulness fills the entire city.
  2. The Holy City has a luminary, even the glory of God in the Lamb (11,23; 22:5).
    1. The light-bearer is the glory of the One sitting upon the Throne (cf. 4:3).
      1. The spotless Lamb Who sacrificed Himself as the highest display of God’s love is the Light (John 1:5; 8:12).
      2. Hence the Holy City needs no natural (sunlight) nor artificial (lamps) light (Isa. 60:1,3,5,19,20).
    2. The inhabitants of this Holy City are those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life (22:27b).
      1. Called the “Lamb’s” because this unites the elect to Him; it is when they were given to Him.
      2. Their life is their knowing the Lamb Who sacrificed Himself for them.
