  1. The basis for the law and for the first commandment is the truth that God is God.
    1. God?s law is complete and irrevocable ? obvious from the way in which it was given to Israel.
    2. Real keeping of the law requires love (Rom. 13:12; Matt. 22:37-39).
    3. God is the only Creator, Sustainer, and Governor of all (Acts 17:24ff).
      1. He is the Wholly Other (unlike any creature); He is Self-existing and independent.
      2. He is One in His Being and in all His activity and purposes (Deut. 6:4), though three in Person.
  2. The first command forbids man to conceive of Him any way other than what He has revealed, and it forbids us to put our trust in anyone or anything other than in Him.
    1. Because we were created as servants, we always serve something.
    2. Fallen man always wants another deity or wants to put his trust in something else.
    3. Other violations of the first commandment.
  3. This truth requires a right worship from us.
    1. Right knowledge of God is necessary first.
    2. Trust in Him alone, with all humility and patience.
    3. Expect all good to be from Him only.
    4. Love, fear, and glorify Him with our whole heart.
