Confession of Faith
  1. The personal confession.
    1. The intent of this passage is that we, by faith, go along with this very personal confession and make it our own.
    2. Nonetheless this personal confession is based on and is an expression of objective reality.
      1. What Paul confesses was true - a reality.
      2. This is a past accomplishment which results in a present reality.
    3. Both election and the atonement were for each elect personally as well as for the elect as an organic whole.
  2. The blessed reality.
    1. Christ died by crucifixion.
      1. The Son of God took upon Himself all the guilt of our sin and sinfulness, becoming a curse for us (3:10-13).
      2. My relationship to Him is so real and so close that it is as though I personally hung on His cross.
    2. ?Nevertheless, I live.?
      1. The life of Christ (and of us) is the life of the crucified One, i.e., One who came out of death.
      2. This life is only by faith because we still live ?in the flesh.?
  3. The solid basis.
    1. The Son of God loved me.
      1. Jesus is identified as very God. We were purchased with the very blood of God!
      2. In Jesus? love to the Father was also His love toward me.
    2. Text emphasizes that the Son of God loved me in the moment of the cross, when He gave Himself for me.
      1. It was His love at the cross which was the revelation of the eternal love of the Triune God.
      2. This love was sovereign.
      3. He loved me personally.
