A Rod out of the Stem of Jesse

Text: Isaiah 11:1
Psalters: 133, 108, 182, 187
  1. The lowly origin.
    1. The context presents the impossibility for Zion’s king to come because Assyria is the axe which destroys Israel (chapter 10).
    2. The figure of a shoot or sprout growing out of cut down tree stump.
    3. With the great apostasy in Israel and Judah, followed by God’s judgment through Assyria on both, it seemed that the promise of the Savior would not be fulfilled. To the faithful few it seemed that there was only spiritual death.
    4. Look at the rule of David and his lineage.
      1. Centrally the Christ comes out of the stump of David.
      2. No Messiah means no salvation.
  2. But out of the stump comes a little green “rod,” a sprout (a reason for joy and gladness).
    1. God remembers His covenant promises and fulfills His promise.
    2. The promise of the Messiah king is not great and mighty according to earthly standards, for it is just a sprout out of a stump.
    3. But the Sprout will produce fruit not of this earth.
    4. It is a spiritual Branch.
    5. He establishes a kingdom far higher than the glory of David’s kingdom; one with the spiritual fruit of salvation.
