- David comforted Bathsheba, his wife.
- Bathsheba was also very distressed and greatly disconsolate at the death of their son, especially because of their sin.
- Part of David’s comfort given to Bathsheba was an exhortation to repentance.
- Further, David comforted her by telling her that God had pardoned their iniquity.
- David also comforted her by laying with her as his wife, and she conceived and bore a son.
- David “called his name Solomon” (cf. I Chronicles 22:8,9), which means “peace.”
- In doing this David told Bathsheba that God had promised a “Solomon” who would succeed David on the throne.
- God comforted, for He is the God of comfort (II Cor. 1:3; 7:6).
- God sent Nathan to declare that Jehovah loved Solomon: Jedidiah.
- David’s son is called Solomon by God’s will, but David also wanted people to know why God gave such grace on him.
- The giving of the name Jedidiah is a declaration of the wonderful goodness of God to the parents.
- Bathsheba too could rejoice in the grace of God which forgave and not bring their death, for God would bless their marriage.
- The birth of this son was a confirmation of the peace and reconciliation of God with David and Bathsheba.
- When “Jehovah loved him” and was a Father to him and he to Him a son as promised (7:14).
- God’s love rests on those whom He is simply pleased to love.
- The basis for our salvation consists in the pure goodness of God.
