Applicatory to the Lord's Supper |
- The condition.
- The city was smaller but very wealthy, and it was located east by southeast of Pergamos.
- The church possessed and exhibited a true and active faith.
- Their faith arose out of ?charity? for God and their neighbor.
- They had ?faith? (conscious union with Jesus Christ) which was evidenced in ?service.?
- They were growing, for ?the last to be more than the first.?
- But there was also something very repulsive to the Lord, Whose ?eyes? see deep within.
- There were a good percentage of the members who were mystical, i.e., emphasized experience above God?s Word.
- This teaching was propagated by a woman (Jesus named her Jezebel).
- God?s Word was neglected as the only rule for faith and life.
- The admonition.
- The knowledge of God?s Word must always be held first and foremost: ?that which ye have already hold fast? (25).
- Clearly implied is the need for Christian discipline on those who place experience above God?s Word.
- The Lord assures the church that He ?will put upon you none other burden? (24).
- The Lord of the church comes with promises.
- His first promise is that God will execute just punishment against Jezebel, her teaching and her followers.
- God will give them opportunity to repent (21, 22b).
- He has ?feet ... like fine brass:? to trample and destroy His enemies.
- He promises an appropriate judgment to adulterous Jezebel (22a, 23a).
- God?s ultimate purpose is that all may ?know that I am He....? (23).
- And He promises a reward to the faithful and repenting (26).
- He will give ?the morning star? (28).
- And He give an exaltation to power ?over the nations? (26) and authority to ?rule ... with a rod of iron? (27).
- May he that has ears to hear strive constantly to overcome.
