Applicatory to the Lord's Supper
  1. The condition.
    1. The city was smaller but very wealthy, and it was located east by southeast of Pergamos.
    2. The church possessed and exhibited a true and active faith.
      1. Their faith arose out of ?charity? for God and their neighbor.
      2. They had ?faith? (conscious union with Jesus Christ) which was evidenced in ?service.?
      3. They were growing, for ?the last to be more than the first.?
    3. But there was also something very repulsive to the Lord, Whose ?eyes? see deep within.
      1. There were a good percentage of the members who were mystical, i.e., emphasized experience above God?s Word.
      2. This teaching was propagated by a woman (Jesus named her Jezebel).
      3. God?s Word was neglected as the only rule for faith and life.
  2. The admonition.
    1. The knowledge of God?s Word must always be held first and foremost: ?that which ye have already hold fast? (25).
    2. Clearly implied is the need for Christian discipline on those who place experience above God?s Word.
    3. The Lord assures the church that He ?will put upon you none other burden? (24).
  3. The Lord of the church comes with promises.
    1. His first promise is that God will execute just punishment against Jezebel, her teaching and her followers.
      1. God will give them opportunity to repent (21, 22b).
      2. He has ?feet ... like fine brass:? to trample and destroy His enemies.
      3. He promises an appropriate judgment to adulterous Jezebel (22a, 23a).
    2. God?s ultimate purpose is that all may ?know that I am He....? (23).
    3. And He promises a reward to the faithful and repenting (26).
      1. He will give ?the morning star? (28).
      2. And He give an exaltation to power ?over the nations? (26) and authority to ?rule ... with a rod of iron? (27).
      3. May he that has ears to hear strive constantly to overcome.
