- Chiefly.
- No age is given to identify the ?aged.?
- The elderly saints are to be ?grave,? i.e., inspire respect and reverence from others.
- They are responsible to conduct themselves so as to be entitled to respect by living as fits holiness.
- ?Holiness? is that which is separated for God?s service.
- Obviously motivated by a deep love of God they strive to live as before God?s face.
- Specific conduct.
- The aged men.
- ?Sober? is to be moderate in all their habits, not given to excess in anything.
- ?Temperate? is to be of a sound mind, especially in:
- ?Faith?
- ?Love?
- ?Patience?
- The aged women.
- They are warned specifically not to be ?false accusers.?
- And warned not to be ?given to much wine.?
- By implication they evidence agape toward their husbands and children, and show respect to their husbands.
- The purpose is that the aged might be effective teachers of good things.
- The ?good things? are useful, beneficial, advantageous to the cause of God?s church.
- To do this effectively they must have the respect of others.
- The elderly have one thing that no one else in the church has: years of experience with its valuable lessons.
